Free Day - a relaxation tour for dementia family

In light of previous finding, “Travel” is not only the most anticipated leisure of elderlies, but also an important activity for enhancing interaction among family members. Therefore, this project stems from the desire to travel and designs a family respite travel service that combines health care with the largest amusement park in Taiwan, a trial collaboration between the tourism industry and the dementia care industry.

The Leofoo Tourism Group, DreamVok and 5% Design Action have conducted in-depth research into customer needs in an attempt to redefine the respite service. In the past, most respite services provided by healthcare institutions were short in duration, and intended to give the family caregiver some time to rest or to do housework; the main purpose being to help them release emotional stress. However, when it comes to staying out or travelling, it is almost impossible to take the demented elderly with them, forcing them to leave the elderly with a care institution or part-time caregiver. Some families have even not gone out together in years because of the guilt of leaving the elderly at home. In the development stage of our project, the design team invited experts in dementia healthcare and non-pharmacological therapy to co-design the new service with all the other stakeholders. The new service is designed for both the elderly and their family members. By arranging for a professional caregiver to travel with the family, no one is left behind. The family can rest assured and feel guilt-free while creating happy memories together.

Travel is almost extravagant for families taking care of elderly members with dementia. Moreover, some of the families have not gone out together for years because of the guilt of leaving the elderly at home.
